What genre do you write?
I write historical fantasy stories set in the real world with a spin of the fantastical. I love taking the everyday things we’re accustomed to and making them magical. One of my favorite quotes is from G. K. Chesteron: “Fairy tales say that apples were golden only to refresh the forgotten moment when we found that they were green. They make rivers run with wine only to make us remember, for one wild moment, that they run with water.”
What’s your favorite book/genre? Why?
My favorite book is by far The Princess and Curdie by George MacDonald because of the deep impact it’s had on my life, and my favorite genre is high fantasy because of the work of writers like Tolkien, Sanderson, and Brooks.
Who is your favorite author / Who do you look up to?
My favorite author is George MacDonald. As for who I look up to, I really look up to my family and how faithful and inspiring they are in day-to-day life.
When did you start writing / When did you start writing seriously?
I started writing at the ripe age of five, but it wasn’t till eleven that I started writing seriously.
Do you have a blog/email list/where can people contact you if they're interested
Yes! You can connect with me on my blog at egrunyan.com and subscribe to my monthly newsletter. My blog is a mixture of personal and artistic pieces. I blog about the beauty of the everyday, theology, apologetics, movies, music, and of course, writing.
Where do you hope to go with your writing/platform?
I hope to reach 500+ subscribers in the next couple of years before trying my hand at traditional publication. Every new subscriber helps!
What is your (life/writing) mission? / Why do you write?
I take my life mission from the first of the Westminster Catechisms: “The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever”. I want every area of my life to glorify God, and the greatest joy of my life is enjoying His wonderful love and mercy to me.
Do you have any books published? What are they about?
I recently indie published my first novel, a historical fantasy tale called “Loch Monster”. It follows the story of two teens growing up in medieval Scotland on the edge of Loch Ness.
What’s your favorite part of the writing journey?
Characters! I love having them develop throughout the course of the story.
What are your favorite resources?
Music and Google Docs are my go-to whenever I write. I also love the work done at Story Warren and The Rabbit Room.
What is your greatest advice to teens/young writers?
Give it all to God. He has a story for you to tell. The writing isn’t about self-expression or fame, it’s about surrender and dedication. Give yourself to God and He will lead you in your writing.
Plotter, Pantser or Plantser?
Pantser! I’ve tried planning out my stories, but have failed every time. I simply can’t stick to a script when it comes to storytelling—it has to take me where I don’t expect, else I find the story boring.
Favorite Ice cream flavor?
Chocolate all the way. (;
